OK, you just bought a great watercolor, it’s lovely, but where to put it? Obviously I can’t tell you that, but I can give you a suggestion where not to put it. Here’s an example: Years ago, my father and his girlfriend hung one of my pictures in his living room. It looked terrible. Why? He had put it very near a nice oil painting, and that did not help either picture. The two mediums just don’t go well together, I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because watercolors are under glass, and oils are not. Or because oils are shiny and watercolors are not, or maybe because watercolors are matted and oils are not, or maybe the intensity of the paints are different. I’m still not sure. Anyway, if you had planned to hang that watercolor next to an oil painting, it might be best to think of another place.
